The pastoral philosophy of the school is consistent with the aims and objectives of the school and so reinforces the general ethos of Emanuel - an ethos based on a child- centred approach, striving for excellence, offering challenge to all and upholding traditional virtues and values.
The pastoral leaders and year group teams - indeed all staff - have key roles to play in sustaining a culture of high social and academic expectations amongst the staff, pupils and parents of the school; expectations which extend well beyond the classroom and the school c ampus.
Although there are separate management structures that co exist for curricular and pastoral management the systems are inter-dependent, each supporting the other to bring about effective teaching and learning. Pastoral management and the delivery of personal, social and health education (PSHE) should not only support pupils' development of personal-social skills but also support and enhance academic achievement. As such PSHE should:
- be an explicit part of the school's whole curriculum policy
- involve aspects of teaching and learning which permeate all of the curriculum
- be the responsibility of all teachers
- Collectively the pastoral system works towards achieving the following:
- empowering pupils with the basic skills, experiences, knowledge and attitudes that are required for work and leisure in a developed and changing society
- preparing all pupils to be active, confident and responsible members of the school community and society
- enabling pupils to become progressively responsible for their own development and education as active, inquiring learners who can benefit from the full range of educational opportunities available at Emanuel
- producing an atmosphere in which all pupils are confident that they are well known, safe, valued, respected and have their progress regularly checked and reported on
- contributing towards the maintenance of good behaviour, fostering positive attitudes and an orderly atmosphere in school conducive to ensuring pupils reach their true potential
- offering sympathetic, confidential and effective support and guidance to pupils as required
- strengthening links with parents, emphasising the shared nature of the educative process
- strengthening links between the community and Emanuel
