Surbiton High School

Surbiton High School

Nearest train station: Surbiton

was founded in January 1883 in response to strong local demand. Its founders were a group of Anglican clergy who instituted the Church Schools Company. Its objective was "to establish superior education for girls in accordance with the principles of the Church of England" wherever the need was felt.

Surbiton was the first of seven schools administered by the Church Schools Company, now a Charitable Trust, whose Council constitutes its Board of Governors. As the nucleus of the new school the founders bought two elegant mid-Victorian houses. From its opening Surbiton has steadily added to its facilities which now include well equipped Science laboratories, Ceramics and Design studios, a Design and Technology Workshop, Drama Centre and a stunning Art School.

In June 1994 a new purpose built Junior Girls' School was opened and in September 1994 a newly designed Sixth Form College became the home for 200 Sixth Form students. An ambitious building programme doubled the size of the Sixth Form College in 2003.

Recent times have seen the development of Surbiton Assembly Halls which gave us ten new classrooms including specialist Music workshops and a large Hall for concerts and theatrical productions. In the main building, we have an additional Science laboratory and a new IT suite with full multi-media capability and Internet access across the network. The playing fields at Hinchley Wood include an all-weather Hockey pitch, Tennis and Netball courts an Athletics track and a refurbished and extended Pavilion.
